SUMMER CLASSES SET TO BEGIN:

Summer classes begin on Monday, June 20, 2011. With that in mind, here is a mini FAQ:

  • I am enrolled. What do I need to do on Monday?
DO NOT MISS THE FIRST CLASS MEETING and make sure you arrive on time. It's a safe bet that people will be petitioning the class.

  • I am on a waitlist(s). If I am not notified by Monday that there is space am I out of luck?
Not necessarily. The waitlists are frozen at midnight the morining the class first meets. If you are on a waitlist at that point, plan on attending the first class session. The faculty member has a copy of the waitlist, in order, which is generally used to facilitate the petitioning process.

  • Why aren't there more classes available?
The number of courses Cypress College — and all California Community Colleges — is limited by the funding provided by the state. The enrollment fees students pay go into the state's budget. Those fees don't cover the colleges' actual costs and they don't all get returned to the colleges either. At this point in time, the state is restricting enrollment in response to its budget crisis.

  • Can't faculty take extra students in class?
They can. There are two important things to note: 1) An overly full class can negatively impact the quality of instruction; 2) As a matter of practice, Cypress College faculty generally take more students than their classes are scheduled to have.

  • What if I can't get any classes this summer?
Fall 2011 course offerings will be more substantial than they are for summer. Hopefully, you will experience better results then. Registration appointments for fall are already in your MyGateway account. Be sure to register at your earliest opportunity.

  • What can I do to improve this situation?
First off, we are disappointed that we are not able to offer more classes this summer. We are doing what we can — given the economic circumstances — to meet the needs of our students. We keep a close eye on the state budget situation, participate in statewide organizations and are active advocates for community college students. If you are interested in becoming better informed about the state budget process, please visit the Student Activities Center and become involved in your Associated Students government. The Community College League of California runs a very comprehensive website and does a great job of advocating for community college students.

FINANCIAL AID MESSAGE ESCAPES:

Recently an old Financial Aid message escaped via MyGateway personal message and email. There are two pieces of good news in this: 1) Aside from an incorrect phone number, the information is accurate and up to date; 2) the test is part of the new and improved MyGateway and is a sign that it's coming soon!

Please note, that the phone number for Financial Aid is: (714) 484-7114. Our staff member in Fine Arts, whose number was incorrectly listed, really can't help with Financial Aid — so please use this number. You can also reach Financial Aid at financialaid@cypresscollege.edu

The message from Financial Aid is a good one, and it applies to all students: MyGateway is a great resource for students and it's available 24/7. Important messages are distributed by Financial Aid, Admissions and Records, and the college in general.

GETTING HELP:

Of course, if you need help with the registration process, of if you're stuck somewhere in MyGateway, we've got friendly staff who can help you out.

Here are some other tips:

mini logo used as a bulletMany questions are answered in our schedule of classes. You can view the class schedule and even use Acrobat's search feature to find the answer to what you're looking for. The document contains a list of offices, their locations and phone numbers.

mini logo used as a bulletWant to know where you're going before you get on campus or even how to get here? View the current map or download a printable version. This page also contains driving directions to the college from the various freeway around the campus.

mini logo used as a bulletMyGateway asks for an "add authorization code" if a class is full. Each instructor is given a list of authorization codes that they may provide to students if they are able to accommodate more people in their class. How (and if) they are used and distributed is completely up to the faculty member. To get into the class, it's most likely that you'll need to attend the first class meeting. Show up early and let the instructor know that you're interested in adding the class if at all possible.
